GSM Alarm+
FAQ

Q. What is the physical size of the unit?

A.

Q. How many different alarm signals can I connect to each unit?

A. Each GSM Alarm has 8 volt-free inputs, which allow you to connect various outputs from your machine, process or anything that has a switch contact. This could be as simple as a limit switch or a door to alert you of tamper or the contacts of a thermostat to inform you of an over/under temperature alarm. With 8 inputs you can use the GSM Alarm as the central point for a number of machines or processes.

Q. Do I need a telephone line?

A. No, like the majority of SeNd Technology’s products, the GSM Alarm is based on GSM (mobile phone) technology so it is wireless and can be used wherever there is GSM coverage. This makes it ideal for applications where it is costly to run, and lease, a standard wired phone line. It also makes a great backup in case the main line fails.

Q. Can I use a standard mobile phone SIM card?

A. Yes. The unit has a small SIM holder under the bottom cover. This contains a standard mini SIM card that can be from any of the main network providers.

Q. What power source do I need?

A. The GSM Alarm is supplied by 12vDC.

Q. Will it run from a battery supply?

A. Yes as long as it is above 9V – but remember the power will be slightly higher during transmission. A small ni-cad battery will do the job and can be used as a back-up device to send an alarm on main power failure. We have a version with an internal battery for monitor power failure.

Q. What is the difference between the GSM Alarm A and GSM Alarm X?

A. GSM Alarm A has a built in antenna. GSM Alarm X requires an external antenna - Ideal for use in weak areas. We can supply high gain versions.

Q. What type of Alarm messages does it send?

A. GSM Alarm can send the following alerts:

  • SMS
  • Email (GPRS version or via GSM Gateway)
  • RING

Q. Can I send a message on the input opening and closing?

A. Yes – the messages can be different for either state. Eg. High Water Level (Close) – Water OK (open).

Q. Can these messages be sent to more than one person?

A. Yes each input can send alerts to numerous recipients. These can be different for each person and can be any combination of the above.

Q. What format is the alarm message sent?

A. See previous answers.

Q. How much does it cost to run?

A. If you use a low cost SIM card you only pay when you send a SMS message. With some network providers this can cost as a few pence. If you use the “ring” only command its free.

Q. Which network should I use?

A. Any that use standard 3v GSM SIM card (Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, O2 etc) but not 3G SIMs

Q. Can I set up my own messages?

A. Yes – All messages are stored on the GSM device using GSM Suite software.

Q. What happens if the power fails?

A. We have a battery backed version of most of our products. These contain an internal 9v battery that is recharged by the unit itself. If the main power fails the GSM device will send a message alerting you of this. It will also send a message when the power is resumed.
